Race formats
and classes

RACE FORMATS

Individual:

The Individual format is a classic mass start in the mountains. You will complete the course alone and are responsible for pacing and managing your own race. This year’s Romsdal Rando Individual race will host the Norwegian Championship in ski mountaineering.

Individual Trim:

You can also take part in the Individual Trim class, which is untimed—ideal if you want to complete the course without being timed.

Team:

For the first time, Romsdal Rando will offer a team competition. The team format is well known in the Alps and is historically the preferred long-distance format. Teams of 2 to 5 will complete the course together and compete against other teams.

In the Team format, it is common to use an elastic band or rope to share the workload, support pacing, and help the team stay together.

Classes and courses

It is up to each participant to choose and register for the course that matches their level. However, there are some age restrictions:

  • Long Course: The minimum age requirement is that you must turn 18 in 2026.

  • Medium Course: The minimum age requirement is that you must turn 16 in 2026.

Norwegian Championships (NM):

If you want to compete in the Norwegian Championships (NM) in the Individual race, you must register for the Individual competition with timing. The following classes and courses apply for the Norwegian Championships:

  • U18 – Medium Course: born 2008–2009

  • U20 – Medium Course: born 2006–2007

  • Senior – Long Course: born in 2005 and earlier

3 kg class:

In both the Individual and Team categories, we offer an optional 3 kg class. In this class, you can compare your time against other participants racing with heavier equipment.

The 3 kg definition is the weight per foot, and is the combined weight of ski + binding + ski boot (per foot). To register in this class, your equipment must weigh at least 3.0 kg per foot.

Long course

The Grand tour of Romsdal Rando takes you through the heart of skimountaineering in Romsdalen. Hard long climbes, breathtaking scenery, ridges and the iconic downhill from Kyrkjetaket.

This race will test all your abilities as a skimountaineer! â€‹

The basics

  • 2400 vertical meters
  • 23 kilometers
  • longest climb 1000 vert
  • Highest point 1439 Masl
  • longest dowhill 7,5k

Route description

  • Start in Isfjorden (Skytebanen) at 130 m a.s.l. The course follows the groomed ski track at the beginning, leading to Kavli parking and further on to Loftskarsetra. From here, the first major climb begins towards Galtåtind, the first summit of the race.

  • At Galtåtind, a technical boot section awaits before you transition back to skis and drop steeply down from the ridge.

  • Back at Loftskarsetra, skins go on again and the second climb starts towards Søre Klauva. Approaching Søre Klauva, you will face another booting section. Near the top, you transition back to skis for an exposed side descent down towards Hestebotn. It is important to follow the marked course here. The steepest part of the descent is around 30 degrees.

  • In Hestebotn, you regroup and prepare for the final climb up to Kyrkjetaket. The ascent starts at a moderate gradient and becomes progressively steeper. As you reach the west ridge of Kyrkjetaket, a final technical boot section begins—often requiring crampons, and potentially a via ferrata depending on conditions—along with spectacular views over Romsdalen.

  • From the summit of Kyrkjetaket, the highest point of the course, a technical descent of approximately 1,000 vertical meters brings you back down to the Kavli road. From there, an easy section on the groomed ski track leads you all the way to the finish line.

The route may be adjusted due to weather, snow, and safety conditions, as described on the information page.
